Original Print Summer Sale - Last few days by Clare Crouchman

It is almost the end of August and only a few days left of my:

Original Print Summer Sale!

Thank you to everyone who has purchased prints so far.

I have enjoyed my printmaking journey having completed the MA in Fine Art Printmaking at Anglia Ruskin in 2008 and then creating original prints at St. Barnabas Press and then in my own studio.

My prints are now held in many private and corporate collections world wide including Japan and USA where many have been sold over the years!

Moving forward I will be focusing on new paintings and the Bowen Technique.

All original prints are reduced to clear.

If you would like to visit my studio and see something in person then please get in touch!

'Fundamental Elements' Exhibition at Orie Art Gallery, Tokyo, Japan by Clare Crouchman

‘Fundamental Elements’ 6th - 22nd June 2023

I have been busy in the studio creating new paintings on canvas for this exciting exhibition alongside papier mache artist Gill Hacket.

‘Albert Einstein said ‘Everything in this world is a form of energy.’

All things in the universe are continuously vibrating with their own frequencies.  These frequencies exist in nature, space and inside our bodies. Everything vibrates at its own frequency and resonance is the rate at which things vibrate.

Sound frequencies move matter into patterns as waveforms. Cymatics is the science of visualising audio frequencies.  It explores how sound and matter merge to make the fields of sound, geometry, light and mathematics become one.

This collection of work is based upon my intuitive interpretation of energetic frequencies.  The formations visually embody this sense of universal vibration which can remind us to slow down and listen. In our busy, fast-paced lives we do not often think about our own unique energetic frequencies and how they affect us.

My paintings are meditative and contemplative objects that I hope will help create this sense of alignment in the viewer. Whilst looking at these paintings remind yourself that we are all energy.  How we treat ourselves reflects how we create our own energy and our outer experience reflects our inner state.  Still your mind and take a moment of contemplation to bring yourself back to your true energetic state.’

'Alignment' - Solo Exhibition at Arundel Contemporary by Clare Crouchman

‘Alignment’ 24th June - 18th July 2021

‘Alignment’ has much in common with what psychologists call ‘the flow state’ or ‘being in the zone’. This is a mental state where, under the right conditions, you become fully immersed in whatever you are doing.

My creative practice involves putting forms and lines into an order. There is no right or wrong, but a point is reached when things are in the correct order, and I feel it intuitively. Everything is in a constant state of flux, but just for that split second, things are right and feel aligned.

In this new collection of work, lines and repetitive patterns form the structure for floating ethereal shapes. I have included iridescent particles and phosphorescent pigments mixed into the paint as well as resins, which create a contrast of surface texture. The formations visually embody this sense of alignment. The aligned form then takes on its own life and becomes an energetic entity in its own right.

My paintings are meditative and contemplative objects that I hope will help create this sense of alignment in the viewer.

Installation at Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre by Clare Crouchman

In March 2021 my newly commissioned paintings were installed at the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre in Cambridge.

“When I was asked to create the six large artworks for The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre I was very excited.  I have always enjoyed patterns that reference science and mathematics in a very intuitive way.  I immediately knew that I wanted to create work that referenced some of these patterns and structures whilst reflecting elements from the amazing building itself which was designed by Danish architect Erik Christian Sorensen.

For the first floor I wanted to use large square panels and create geometric mathematical designs in the three pieces.  I also wanted to draw on some of the architectural features.  The colours are warm and come from the brickwork and the wood and there is a large circular table.  The unusual geometric structure which covers a circular hole in the floor is reflected in the first piece.  The colours and shapes of the second piece reference the distinctive decorative brickwork in the facing wall and other parts of the building.  Finally the last piece draws patterns from the other brickwork and warmer tones from the wood combined with the neutral greys.

For the second floor pieces I wanted to reference the work that the CCDC does.  I have endeavoured to distil patterns and ideas in a way that reflects the processes without being an exact scientific design.  They all have subtle light reflecting particles mixed into the paint as well as shapes that glow in the dark.

In the third piece I have drawn upon the patterns of chemical structures. The background incorporates shapes from some electron density maps created by Dorothy Hodgkin in 1945. This is a reference to all the famous female crystallographers including Olga Kennard who founded the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre in 1965.

The actual process of creating the work was very interesting.  Six paintings all at once is overwhelming and daunting so I had to break everything down into separate steps.  After initial research and experimentation it soon became clear that it was only whilst working of each step that the next action or idea was revealed to me. I had to simultaneously remain focussed whilst also allowing the process to intuitively develop. This feeling of being in the flow is in common with all creative endeavours in every field of work and also reflects life in general.

Although the pieces are quite structured, geometric and scientific in design they are very much created by hand.  They are not perfect but there is no such thing as perfection and I hope that the human hand of the artist can be present in a scientific world of data.

I am pleased with the pieces I have made and how they look now that they are installed.  I hope that everyone who uses the building enjoys looking at them and that they do justice to the work done there and to the building itself.”

New materials! by Clare Crouchman

It was a lovely Winter Open Studio weekend with lots of visitors and several ceramic wall panels and ceramic pendants finding new homes.

I have also been experimenting with new materials and have enjoyed creating these small mixed media pieces on panel.

It is early days but I feel that it is the beginning of a new adventure!

I will keep you posted of my progress during 2020.

Winter Open Studio 2019 by Clare Crouchman

Winter time …. cold in the studio but ….

Over the last few months I have been busy organising my new working life.

Although I have sold the majority of my ceramic wall panels and have had lots of studio visits from happy customers, I do still have some nice pieces left that can be seen in my online shop!

For my Winter Open Studio I will be selling the ceramic wall panels as well as the ceramic jewellery pendants.

Recently I have been ‘playing’ with new materials and am attracted to mixed media paintings. At this stage it is important not to put too much pressure on myself to ‘create’ finished pieces but to allow myself to connect with the creative process and try out different mediums. As a professional artist I found it was easy to fall into a very stressful way of working with deadlines and commissions always looming. I now realise that although I was happy with the results it meant my body began to suffer. A few years ago I experienced ‘burnout’ after a particularly busy period and have now taken steps to include relaxation and physical exercise into my routine and work with a more mindful mindset.

I have also set up Clare Crouchman Therapy and have started practicing as a Bowen Therapist which is a wonderful and relaxing therapy that complements the way I now work as an artist.

End of an Era.... by Clare Crouchman

What an amazing ‘End of an Era’ Open Studio!

After 25 years of making ceramic wall panels I have now stopped making them as I wish to pursue some different materials.

I opened my studio as part of Cambridge Open Studios during the first two weekends of July.

I had so many visitors and saw so many of my ceramic wall panels go off to new homes. Norway, Portugal, Germany and Aberdeen being the most far flung!

Thank you so much to everyone who I have met over the last 25 years who have supported me and my work.

If you couldn’t make it in person there are still some ceramic wall panels left and they are available from my Shop!

I will now be spending some time experimenting with new materials and creating some new work…….
